Driving abroad: a simple guide to staying safe

There are many UK holidaymakers who enjoy the flexibility afforded to them by taking their own car away with them or indeed hiring a car in their destination country. Being able to jump into a vehicle and drive to a new area at the drop of a hat is a huge boost for those who value spontaneity. If you're planning to do the same thing yourself, though, you'll need to know more than just which side of the road to drive on.

It's a good idea to do some research at the outset and find out if you'll need to obtain an international driving permit - and if so, to get that application processed as early as possible so that you don't need to worry about it in the run up to your trip. In addition, if you're going to be taking your own car with you on holiday, you'll need to notify your car insurance provider in good time and ensure that you're fully covered for driving outside of the UK.

General driving style and etiquette can differ fairly dramatically from country to country, so it's an idea to read up on the country you'll be visiting to see if there are any general tips to be taken on board. Local road laws may also differ to the ones you're used to in the UK, so that's something else that it's important to read up on. Also be sure to check what speed limits are enforced in the country you'll be visiting, as well as the local legal blood alcohol limit - both could be lower than in the UK and ignorance isn't a valid excuse if you get caught violating traffic laws.

Try and avoid overly long car journeys while you're away, especially if you took a long flight to get there and may be suffering from jet lag. If you have other drivers on holiday with you it's a good idea to split the driving duties in an attempt to keep everyone fresh when on unfamiliar roads.

Be sure to carry your identification, including your passport and driving licence, with you when driving abroad. You'll find in some countries that being pulled over for a routine spot check is much more common than in the UK, so don't be alarmed if you find yourself being told to do so. Remain calm and co-operate in full and you'll have no problems.
